2018 Working Writer’s Retreat at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino

It was Friday, the day of the writers retreat. Part of me wants to add an exclamation point to that sentence, but that’s not how I felt that morning.

Everything had been packed. I had done my preparations. I had justified my lack of preparations. It was too late to do anything else. I was never one for cramming before a test. I preferred to stew . . . 

The weekend was a big opportunity—I would get to meet picture book agents and editors in person, face-to-face! They would read my work. (Gulp, they would read my work?!)

The editorial process is a give-and-take experience between two equal, essential partners. Kite Tales listens in as YA author Sara Hosey and freelance editor Christine Van Zandt discuss working together to bring a book they felt was both crowd-pleasing and socially significant to market. Summer People, published by CamCat Books and released August 8, 2023, tells the story of seventeen year-old Christmas Miller. Over the course of a summer, as Christmas tries to navigate sudden friction in her closest friendship and fathom a violent attack on another of her friends, she learns that the ADHD she’d thought was a liability is actually a superpower. Here are Sara’s and Christine’s reflections on the path to publication. – KT

2018 Working Writer’s Retreat at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino

From September 29–October 1, 2023, writers will once more gather at the beautiful Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino, CA, for the first Los Angeles Working Writer’s Retreat since 2019. Attendees will have the opportunity to get feedback on their work from five faculty members who are either literary agents or editors. Between scheduled critique sessions, attendees will have time to write and revise (or nap, if they so choose!).

The Camarillo Public Library will host CenCal’s 2023 Writer’s Day on September 9.

Join SCBWI CenCal for Writer’s Day 2023!

WRITER’S DAY: SPARK THE FIRE WITHIN is a two-day event this year. The first day is in-person at a new location, the Camarillo Library, on Saturday, September 9. Doors open at 8:45 am, coffee and pastries for early arrivers. Event begins at 9:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Day One includes writing contests, written critiques, first lines feedback, 4-corners critique meet-up, door prizes, book sales, and a tour of the Camarillo Library Children’s Room, aka the Pirate Ship.
