I’m not from Los Angeles. I didn’t go to USC or UCLA. The most time I’ve ever spent on either campus has been working on movie locations, so I had no idea that Child’s Way was the name of a street, not a section of the festival — which ended up being in the “Hero Complex.” Continue reading

SCBWI members have a legendary reputation for being friendly and supportive. Working the SCBWI LA Times Festival of Books booth with fellow authors proved, as always, that this characterization is well deserved.
I would estimate about half the festivalgoers who stopped by our booth were interested in purchasing our books and the other half curious to learn more about the world of children’s books. We were happy to accommodate on both ends. Continue reading

Puppy dogs and fairy queens, stars and wishes and unseen things . . . as a community of writers and illustrators, we have wondrous tales to spin and dazzling visuals to design. Our hope is that you find in this new year your strongest voice ever. For there are children waiting, children who need your stories of hope and love and adventure and triumph in their hands. Tell yourself, for them, that this is your year, and mean it.
All our best to all our Los Angeles SCBWI members from the Regional Team and Board

Hello SCBWI –Los Angeles! If you attended our recent Writer’s Day at the Skirball Cultural Center, you will already know that Sarah Laurenson shared some rather “big” regional news. After many years as Co-Regional Advisor, first with Lee Wind and then with yours truly, Sarah has decided to step down for a well-earned rest!

It was on Sarah and Lee’s watch that SCBWI obtained its nonprofit status. With that came more rules, regulations, more scrutiny—and many more RA volunteer hours needed than ever before. Sarah tackled all of these new challenges with aplomb and by the time I came onboard three years ago, there was a “system” in place for just about everything! Who knew that spreadsheets could be an art form?
