Author, filmmaker, and podcaster Andy Greene

It was Friday, the day of the writers retreat. Part of me wants to add an exclamation point to that sentence, but that’s not how I felt that morning.

Everything had been packed. I had done my preparations. I had justified my lack of preparations. It was too late to do anything else. I was never one for cramming before a test. I preferred to stew . . .

The weekend was a big opportunity—I would get to meet picture book agents and editors in person, face-to-face! They would read my work. (Gulp, they would read my work?!)

Illustrators: Let’s Talk about Agents!

By Jaime Zollars, Illustrator Coordinator, SCBWI CenCal

As the illustrator coordinator for the Central Coast, I’ve found that a topic of primary interest among member illustrators is agents, and the most pressing question is how to find one. If you are an illustrator seeking representation, my best advice is to consider whether or not you are ready, do your research, create an ordered list, reach out to artists represented by agents you plan to contact, double-check submissions criteria, solicit no more than a few agents at one time, and be prepared for another round of submissions if your first attempt is not what you hoped!

1. Is your work ready for an agent?  You only have one chance for an agent to see your work for the first time. Consider whether your work is ready for an agent. Examine your work for consistency, craft, and presentation. Does your work have a developed look to it that has a unique identity? Does the work appear to be crafted professionally? Is the work available on a website that is carefully curated, easy to navigate, and professional? If you can say yes to all three questions, you may be ready to find your match.

Then you will likely wonder, “How do I find an agent?” This is the golden question, but there is a better question to ask.

Lucy Hamilburg, owner and agent at The Hamilburg Agency

The SCBWI-LA Working Writers Retreat returns on September 29-October 1. There are still some seats left for this popular in-person gathering that puts you in the company of kidlit agents or editors and writing colleagues with a serious commitment to their craft. Our fabulous faculty members are looking forward to it, and they’ve been kind enough to field some mix-and-match interview questions about themselves to help break the ice. Whether you’re attending this year or just curious, there’s plenty to discover in their words.

First up: Lucy Hamilburg, who is a literary agent based in Los Angeles. A former teacher with a goal of motivating young people to love books, she’s now an agent who works to create long-lasting relationships with her clients, editors, and publishers, to amplify diverse voices, and to inspire and sustain life-long readers. Heading the kidlit side of her agency, Lucy represents picture books, middle grade, and young adult fiction. Read on to get acquainted.

Ask an Editor: Traditional Publication with or without an Agent

05 Wednesday May 2021

“Ask an Editor” is a forum wherein SCBWI members submit questions that are answered as part of our quarterly Kite Tales blog.

Hello Christine – Does traditional publication require an agent? Thanks.

—Jay, Glendale

Hello Jay – Traditional publication often happens via an agent, but an agent is not required.

Writers who seek traditional publication typically query literary agents. Once they secure an agent’s representation, that agent will submit the writer’s manuscript to publishers.

However, some publishers will connect directly with authors. For example, I pitched my children’s nonfiction picture book idea on a Twitter pitch event called #PitMad. The children’s editor at a midsize publisher contacted me and my book was published without an agent.
