wayfinding | ˈwāˌfīndiNG | noun the process or activity of ascertaining one’s position and planning and following a route

No single blog post can put us firmly on our individual career paths, but this week’s post can help us discover our routes by putting us in closer touch with folks who will help us shape them. These colleagues, teachers, and friends are the members of our own SCBWI community. For those new to the organization or the area, and for those who haven’t fully delved into the new website or aren’t yet familiar with the Kite Tales blog, here’s some 2025 wayfinding to help you get where you want.

Connect with Your Region(s)

If you haven’t done it yet, start this year by identifying your regions on the scbwi.org website. It makes it easier for you to keep up on their news, and for them to connect to you. It only takes a few steps.

  • Sign in at scbwi.org.
  • Go to your Member Home page.
  • Go to your Member Profile.
  • Go to Edit My Profile.
  • Under Settings, click into “Set your SCBWI home region” to bring up the drop-down menu.
  • Select a region to add.
  • Repeat the drop-down-and-click for any additional regions you may want to connect with.
  • Click “Update.”

Done! You will now see news and events from your chosen regions on your Member Home page.

Connect with Kite Tales

Your region(s) may have a newsletter and/or online blog that you can subscribe to for news and potentially contribute to as a regional member.

Kite Tales is the blog platform for and about the members of three California SCBWI regions: Central/Coastal, Los Angeles, and SoCal.

You can link to it directly from your browser at scbwikitetales.com. A link on the Los Angeles Region page of the SCBWI website also takes you there, to the current blog post.

Once on the blog, there are a number of things you can do.

  • Follow the blog to receive a weekly email with a link to that week’s post, which typically drops on Wednesday mornings.
  • Check out the articles. Read the monthly list of opportunities and events (regional and beyond). Or browse the searchable archive of industry profiles, opinion pieces, or craft and business articles. Maybe enter a contest.
  • Submit news, AMA questions, or proposals for our regular columns. The submissions page offers options to fill out forms (and notes any deadlines) for KT’s “Great News,” “Toot Your Horn,” “Ask an Editor,” and “Illustrator Gallery” features.
  • Reach out to the editorial staff via email at scbwila.editor@gmail.com to submit article proposals. Our all-volunteer staff appreciates your interest—and your patience in awaiting a reply.

Make community connection a part of your path for 2025. There’s nothing better for finding your way!
