An amazing faculty will present to in-person and Zoom attendees of the SCBWI SoCal Fall Harvest conference, Saturday, October 7.

Join SCBWI SoCal at Cal State University Fullerton or on Zoom on October 7, to learn about craft and book publishing, connect with professionals in the industry, and mingle with other SCBWI attendees.

SoCal’s FALL HARVEST WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS DAY will take place Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can attend in-person at California State University, Fullerton OR participate via Zoom. Lunch is provided for in-person attendees.

The conference has opportunities for both writers and illustrators. Writers can enter the writing contest, sign up for written critiques, pitch an agent or editor, and enter their First Page to hear first impressions by faculty. Illustrators can enter a portfolio contest and a picture-book dummy contest; sign up for written critiques on their portfolio, picture book dummy, and/or graphic novel dummy; and enter a one-page presentation sample of their illustrations to receive faculty impressions. In-person attendees can get books signed by presenting authors, buy books, and spend lunchtime with faculty.

Craft and conversation are on the schedule at the 2023 SCBWI SoCal Fall Harvest conference.

Among the many amazing speakers in this year’s conference lineup are: Megan Ilnitzki, senior editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books; Savannah Brooks, agent at KT Literary; and Lucy Hamilburg, agent at The Hamilburg Agency.

A morning breakout session for illustrators will feature Lauren Rille, art director at Simon & Schuster, and Lisa Johnston Hancock, published illustrator.

There will be two published member panels. Authors Tina Athaide and Laura Taylor Namey will answer questions about writing and publishing middle-grade and young adult. Author Scott Sussman and illustrator Reggie Brown will address creating and publishing picture books.

The editor and two agents will give feedback on the openings of your submitted manuscripts in a First Pages panel. New this year, they will also share first impressions of illustrators’ one-page presentation submissions.

Toward the end of the day, attendees can ask the faculty panel their burning questions. The day will end with awarding prizes to contest and raffle winners.
