As the Olympic torch makes its way to the 2024 Paris Games, the Los Angeles region has its own torch story to tell—this one about the passing of a torch as one volunteer-led era segues into a new one. Here’s the news from our Regional Team leaders, in their own words:

A Letter from Sally Jones Rogan 

Dear Los Angeles members,

Some weeks back, candidates were invited to apply for volunteer L.A. Regional Advisors. We are thrilled to announce that SCBWI Headquarters has appointed our very own Kim Wildman to step into the L.A. Regional Advisor role. 

Many of you will already know Kim as our highly capable Assistant Regional Advisor (ARA, or as we aptly renamed the title, “Always Running Around”)! Kim has many years of experience as a Regional Team volunteer and is perfectly suited to spearhead events, present member opportunities, lead the regional volunteer team, and undertake the administrative duties and reporting required by SCBWI Headquarters.

IMG_5103Every year in September, a handful of writers lucky enough to have secured a spot at SCBWI LA’s Working Writers Retreat gather at a retreat center in Encino. This year it was my immense honor to attend as the recipient of the Sue Alexander Grant.

No one could have done more to set a positive atmosphere at the event, held September 15-17, than Co-Regional Advisor Nutschell Windsor, who began the opening session with this simple promise: all your needs will be met so you can relax and focus entirely on your writing. They delivered on that promise right away, assembling an outstanding First Pages Panel (authors and freelance editors Judy Enderle and Stephanie Gordon, and author Catherine Linka) who provided sincere praise interwoven with meaningful feedback.

Founded in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based children's writers, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is a non-profit, 501 (c)3 organization. There are currently more than 22,000 members worldwide, in over 70 regional chapters writing and illustrating in all genres for young readers, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.
