“Ask an Editor” is a forum wherein SCBWI members submit questions that are answered quarterly as part of our Kite Tales blog.

Hi Christine – I keep hearing about “literary citizenship.” How does this apply to authors?

KD, Redondo

Hello KD – For me, literary citizenship means establishing and maintaining relationships. It also means giving throughout our careers without expecting something in return; relationships aren’t a 50-50 thing. But, just wait; those relationships will pay off, guaranteed.

Establishing relationships can be done in person, online, or a mix.

–       Join and participate in a book club, a critique group

–       Join and participate in organizations—like SCBWI!

–       Attend “bookish” events

–       Support other authors by buying their books if you can afford to

–       Check books out from the library; get to know the people who work there

–       If the library doesn’t have someone’s book, then suggest a purchase—many libraries have online forms to make this quick and easy such as THIS ONE for LAPL

–       Support local bookstores; get to know the people who work there

–       Volunteer at events or in an online capacity

–       Engage online

For more information on literary citizenship and many other topics important to writers, I highly recommend Jane Friedman’s book The Business of Being a Writer. She sums up literary citizenship as, “To be a recognized community member means operating so as to generate respect and trust. If you try to use the community to fulfill only your own goals (like selling a book), the community will respond less enthusiastically over time.”

IN CONCLUSION

Start early in your career, finding ways to engage that feel authentic and commit to engaging regularly. Some day you will have a book (or many!). All the times you’ve given support, all the connections you’ve made, those people will be there to support you.
