Join the SCBWI Illustration Community in October for 31 days of drawing fun as part of SCBWI Artober 2024! Throughout the month, get inspired with daily prompts to create new art while working in any medium you like. “The goal is to develop a daily practice of creating new art.” Be sure to share your work with the #scbwiArtober2024 hashtag on Instagram and Twitter (X).

OCTOBER 5
Registration to attend the SCBWI SoCal Fall Harvest Writers and Illustrators Day online is still open! While all spots to attend in-person are already filled, online attendees will still have access to the wonderful presentations by agents, an art director, authors, and an illustrator. The event will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
OCTOBER 5–6
Get ready for Rare Books LA on October 5–6, 2024, at the historic Los Angeles Union Station! This weekend will be filled with “leading specialists in antiquarian books, ephemera, and map,” all nestled within the historic Ticket Concourse at Union Station, “the backdrop for numerous classic films and television shows as well as the 2021 Academy Awards.”
OCTOBER 12
Celebrate with more books at the Ventura County Celebration of Books on October 12, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the California State University Channel Islands Campus! This free event will feature various speaker events, book signings, children’s activities, and exhibitors from all over Ventura County.
NOVEMBER 1
Calling all newly published authors! Submit your books to the International Literacy Association (ILA) 2025 Children’s and Young Adult Book Awards by November 1, 2024. The ILA 2025 Children’s and Young Adult Book Awards are “given for an author’s first or second published book written for children or young adults (birth to 17 years).” Click here to apply!
NOVEMBER 1
Grab your pens, set some milestones, and connect with other writers as National Novel Writing Month kicks off on November 1, 2024! “The daunting but straightforward challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days” began in 1999 and has now been challenged by thousands of novelists around the world. What will you write about this month?
NOVEMBER 15
Submissions for the 2024 SCBWI Golden Kite Awards close on November 15, 2024! “The Golden Kite Awards recognize excellence in children’s literature” and are “the only children’s literary award judged by a jury of peers.” Individuals are encouraged to submit to the Golden Kite Awards in conjunction with their publisher. NOVEMBER 15
The deadline to submit books for the 2025 Walter Awards is November 15, 2024. The Walter Dean Myers Awards for Outstanding Children’s Literature “celebrates and honors diverse books by diverse creators.” The 2025 Walter Awards will be awarded in two categories: Teen and Younger Readers. Submissions must be “written by a diverse author and the submission must be a diverse work.” For more information, click here.

I encourage other kid lit authors to do the same. It’s a great way to support kidlitart and our fellow children’s book creators, and the images are SO inspiring!
