Hello SCBWI –Los Angeles! If you attended our recent Writer’s Day at the Skirball Cultural Center, you will already know that Sarah Laurenson shared some rather “big” regional news. After many years as Co-Regional Advisor, first with Lee Wind and then with yours truly, Sarah has decided to step down for a well-earned rest!

It was on Sarah and Lee’s watch that SCBWI obtained its nonprofit status. With that came more rules, regulations, more scrutiny—and many more RA volunteer hours needed than ever before. Sarah tackled all of these new challenges with aplomb and by the time I came onboard three years ago, there was a “system” in place for just about everything! Who knew that spreadsheets could be an art form?

Happy New Year to all of our Los Angeles SCBWI Members from the Regional Team and Board!

This year, Writer’s Day has an exciting new format that you won’t want to miss.

On Saturday, March 12th, we will be at the beautiful Skirball Cultural Center. Registration opens January 10th. Click on this link for the full details: http://losangeles.scbwi.org/events/la-writers-day-16/.

Main Stage: In the Magnin Auditorium, there will be a morning of talks by publishing professionals and author presentations in the afternoon. Each talk will allow time for questions from you, the audience. We will also have door prizes and the Sue Alexander Service and Encouragement Award.

Upcoming in the L.A. Region

The Working Writer’s Retreat

Sept 11-13, 2015 – Holy Spirit Retreat Center, Encino

A 3-day, 2-night intense revision retreat beginning and ending with a first page (~200 word) pitch session. The retreat opens Friday at noon and consists of critique sessions, revision time, and parties – including Saturday night karaoke. A practice first page session with an Author panel begins the fun which crescendos in a pitch session with four acquiring Editors and Agents. Members only.

What is SCBWI?

Founded in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based children's writers, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is a non-profit, 501 (c)3 organization. There are currently more than 22,000 members worldwide, in over 70 regional chapters writing and illustrating in all genres for young readers, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.
