Registration for the 2025 SCBWI Winter Conference in New York City is now open! “This year’s event features must-attend keynotes from Newbery Medal–winning author Meg Medina, Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator Sophie Blackall, and Caldecott Honor–winning author/illustrator Peter Brown.” If you are unable to attend the in-person conference from January 31, 2025–February 2, 2025, the Virtual Winter Conference will take place February 21–22, 2025.

NOVEMBER 15
Send in your submissions for the 2024 SCBWI Golden Kite Awards by November 15, 2024! “The Golden Kite Awards recognize excellence in children’s literature” and are “the only children’s literary award judged by a jury of peers.” Individuals are encouraged to submit to the Golden Kite Awards in conjunction with their publisher. NOVEMBER 15
The last date to mail eligible titles for the 2025 Walter Awards is November 15, 2024. The Walter Dean Myers Awards for Outstanding Children’s Literature “celebrates and honors diverse books by diverse creators.” The 2025 Walter Awards will be awarded in two categories: Teen and Younger Readers. Submissions must be “written by a diverse author and the submission must be a diverse work.” For more information, click here.

NOVEMBER 23
Come meet some of your favorite children’s book authors on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Barnes & Noble Victorville Mall, located at 14400 Bear Valley Road. Attendees will be able to talk with various authors in the SCBWI SoCal region and get a chance to have some books signed!

NOVEMBER 30
Have you published a children’s book through a non-traditional publishing route? Submit your book for the SCBWI Spark Award by November 30! “The winner and honor recipients (if applicable) will receive: Spark seals to display on their book, the opportunity to teach a digital workshop about their publishing journey, the chance to be featured in the SCBWI online bookstore and publicized through SCBWI social networking sites.” For more information, click here.

NOVEMBER 30
Have you started your first draft yet? If not, there is still plenty of time to finish writing 50,000 words by November 30, 2024, for National Novel Writing Month! “The daunting but straightforward challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days” began in 1999 and has now been challenged by thousands of novelists around the world. DECEMBER 1
Send in your book for the SCBWI Charlotte and Wilbur Award for Compassion for Animals by December 1! “This award is open to fiction and nonfiction children’s, middle grade, and YA books published in 2024 that teach young readers about the critical role animals play in our lives and ecosystems.” Books may be traditionally or self-published in 2024.
