Registration for the Virtual Summer Conference is now open. The online event will take place from August 1–August 4. Early Bird Registration for members before June 21 is $175. There will be 50 jam-packed sessions to choose from on the topic of craft and the business of children’s book creation. Attendees will have access to all content sessions for up to one month after the conference.

JUNE 3 – JUNE 20
Final voting for the Crystal Kite Member Choice Awards is now open. This peer-given award recognizes great books from 15 SCBWI regional divisions around the world, including California/Hawaii. All SCBWI members are welcome to vote on their favorite books from each division. Members may vote once each round in as many divisions as they want. Round 2 Final Voting: June 3–June 20. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, June 28.

JUNE 8
On Saturday, June 8, the Santa Clarita Valley Book Festival will be bringing together authors, readers, and book lovers of all ages for a celebration of literature, creativity, and community. Co-sponsored by the College of the Canyons, CalArts, Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library, Santa Clarita Atheists & Free Thinkers, and Kwaai.ai, the festival will take place at the College of the Canyons University Center from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event is free to attend.

JUNE 15
Saturday, June 15, 2024, is the final day to apply for the Little, Brown Emerging Artist Award, hosted by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This initiative seeks unpublished, promising new talent (self-published authors may enter) and “encourages the development of high-quality picture books.” The selected winner will receive “American Express gift cards totaling $1,500 and a portfolio review by a Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ professional children’s book design and editorial team,” alongside this year’s Artist Mentor and judge Vashti Harrison. Additionally, the winner will “have an opportunity to have his or her submission to be reviewed by the Little, Brown Books for Young Readers editorial team for possible future publication.”

JUNE 30
Submissions for the New Visions Award, hosted by Lee & Low Books, are open until Sunday, June 30, 2024. The biennial award is given to ” an unpublished writer of color or Native/Indigenous writer” for a middle grade, young adult, or graphic novel manuscript. One winner will be selected to receive a standard publication contract, which includes Lee & Low Books’ basic royalties for a first-time author and a $15,000 advance, as well as a “close publishing mentorship as they work to develop their book for publication.”
