The Camarillo Public Library will host CenCal’s 2023 Writer’s Day on September 9.

Join SCBWI CenCal for Writer’s Day 2023!

WRITER’S DAY: SPARK THE FIRE WITHIN is a two-day event this year. The first day is in-person at a new location, the Camarillo Library, on Saturday, September 9. Doors open at 8:45 am, coffee and pastries for early arrivers. Event begins at 9:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Day One includes writing contests, written critiques, first lines feedback, 4-corners critique meet-up, door prizes, book sales, and a tour of the Camarillo Library Children’s Room, aka the Pirate Ship.

Presenters include Melissa Manlove, executive editor at Chronicle Books; Jen Rofé, agent with Andrea Brown Literary; and Jaime Zollars, illustrator coordinator for SCBWI CenCal. Melissa Manlove’s topic is Big Feelings: Transforming your Past into Readers’ Futures. Jen Rofé will present What You Should Know about Publishing. Jaime Zollars will share 1000 Decisions: The Truth about Bookmaking.

Lin Oliver, co-founder and former executive director of SCBWI, as well as a children’s book writer and writer-producer of family films, television series, and movies for children, will speak on How to Achieve a Successful Career in Children’s Books. Come say, “Hello.”

There will be four Spotlight Speakers: Kitty Donohoe, Mona Alvarado Frazier, Karen Jameson, and Patrice Karst. Each will speak individually and as part of a panel.

Day Two is an optional online pitchfest on Sunday, September 10, for Writer’s Day attendees only, at an additional cost. Attendees can reserve a 10-minute pitch spot with an editor or agent of their choice. At least one faculty participant will look at illustrator portfolios as part of the pitchfest.
